Students checking on the growth of their sunflower seed about a week after they were planted.

If At First You Don't Suc"Seed" ......

by Theresa Farris

September 17, 2009

The first sunflower house we planted in early spring bloomed in July. When school started the sunflowers had already turned to seed. Our plans to pull the stalks together to make a sunflower house did not come to pass. But
if at first you don’t suc”seed” … try, try again!
So the first week of school we started new seeds.
We had intentions of transplanting the seedlings in the garden in hopes of the sunflowers blooming before the first frost.
But again our plans must change due to the abundance of rain in the previous weeks of school.

We are into the 3rd week of school and our seedlings have 4 sets of leaves and are in need of space to expand. We transplanted our sunflowers into larger containers where they will have more room to grow. Our plans now are to keep them in the greenhouse with hopes they receive enough sunlight to mature.

Each Monday students will measure and chart the growth of their sunflower plants.  On Monday, Sept. 14th, the average sunflower plants measured 14 centimeters.
After the sunflowers bloom we will have to decide whether to pull the stalks together in the greenhouse or bring them into the classroom to form the sunflower house.  No matter where we build our sunflower house, I am sure we will enjoy its beauty.
