Thousands of students throughout the country and in many foreign countries competed recently in the Knowledge Master Open academic competition. Middle school, junior high, and high school students faced their computers and 200 tough questions to vie for top scores based on the accuracy and speed of their answers.
A middle school team of 6 students in USD 504 schools scored 1136 of 2000 possible points ranking them 294th out of 577 competing teams. They ranked 23rd out of 41 teams in Kansas and 21st out of 98 teams from schools their size. They answered 168 questions correctly. At the high school level, a team of 5 students answered 134 questions correctly for 783 total points.
Academic coach Kelli Hendrickson described the event as exciting and educational. The students worked together as a team and performed exceptionally well.
Students on the middle school team included: Klayton Beasley, Jenna Goodnight, Allen Guy, David McBrien, Ariel Siu, and Matt Wegner. Students on the high school team included: Kyler Beasley, Stuart Keener, Jake Miller, Ryan Schenker, and Maggie Wiggins.
The Knowledge Master Open was designed to stimulate enthusiasm for learning and recognition for academic accomplishment. The contest runs on classroom computers to allow all students the opportunity to compete in a large academic event without the expense of traveling to a central site. Contest results and example questions are available at www.greatauk.com.
