Discovery Days

by Samantha Smith

February 28, 2011

SVCA students, grades K-5, were invited to attend Discovery Days at Neosho Heights on February 21st.  Discovery Days is a day for students to learn about a range of different topics.  This year students were able to attend sessions and receive tips for basketball, cheerleading, dance and twirling, chess, and kick boxing.  LBC Ambulance Service took time to inform students about the procedures and equipment that is used in an ambulance.  Students were also able to tour the ambulance and hear the sirens.  LBC Soil Conservation taught students about the importance of farmers.  They also learned about the different soil layers and were able to make an edible model!  At different sessions students learned about the art of quilling, how to make a Japanese Koi Kite, how to make snacks that are healthy, and also how to take care of their pets.  Students that attended the session, Cowboy Up learned how to rope.  KKOW Radio attended at taught students about broadcasting.  Other sessions included, Fly Fishing, Indian Tribe, Cookie Decorating, Play Dough Fun, Old Time Games, Hot Hair, Big Equipment, Germ Busters, and Mad Scientist.  The KBI was also there to talk with students.  At the session, Composite Critters, students learned about making a worm farm and were able to take a worm home!

The Cobbler session taught students about repairing shoes.  Students were able to practice polishing and stretching shoes.  Another session let students make grow cards.  Grow cards are made from construction paper, water, and seeds.  Students filled a cookie cutter with the construction paper and water mix, added seeds, and then more of the mix.  When the card is dry, students can plant them in the ground and wait for the flowers to grow!  There was also a session about snakes.  Students learned about venomous and nonvenomous snakes.  They were also able to hold some of the snakes!

The day started out with a whole group session in the gym.  Members of the Seneca-Cayuga Indian tribe informed students about the tribe and demonstrated ceremonial dances.  The students then broke into groups and attended four sessions in the morning, had a lunch break, and then attended four more sessions in the afternoon.  Students and faculty gathered in the gym and enjoyed a blue grass music concert for the closing session.
